Risk & Trade Planning

Put invalidation, position size and exits on paper before you trade. Work through the numbers and build a repeatable review.

Lesson 4

Set limits for the whole session

Manage combined exposure and account rules rather than evaluating each trade alone.

Study time: about 8m

Lesson

Several individually small trades can create a large combined exposure. Two positions driven by the same market may lose together. Track open planned risk, realized losses, fees and account equity as separate quantities rather than resetting your attention whenever you open a new ticket.

Write session rules before starting: maximum planned risk per trade, maximum combined open risk, a session loss threshold and a condition for stopping after execution errors. These are ceilings, not targets to spend. Your personal rules should leave room inside any provider restrictions.

Prop-firm daily and trailing drawdown calculations differ. Some use equity including open profit and loss, others use balance or particular reset times. A headline account size is not the amount you are allowed to lose. Read the current rule for that exact account, including the timezone, and monitor it with the provider’s own figures.

Worked example

In a hypothetical session, your planned loss ceiling is $150 and realized losses including costs are $90. A new trade estimates $50 risk, but another open trade already estimates $30 risk. The combined exposure would take you to $170 before any additional slippage, exceeding your own ceiling.

Try it in replay

Write down a session stop rule and calculate remaining room after two $35 losses and $10 of costs within a hypothetical $100 ceiling. Identify one reason the remaining number is not permission to risk all of it.

Check your reasoning

Only $20 remains before the ceiling, and open risk must still be considered. Execution uncertainty can exceed an estimate. Stopping early is compatible with the limit; consuming every dollar is not required.
